FileStar /2
Tip 001: 08/01/1999 |
Use file
filters to screen the files shown in the file windows. Filters may
be different for each window and may be toggled between the last (this
session) and current filters by clicking on the last filter button
at the bottom of the file window. You may exclude
files that match a wildcard pattern by preceding that pattern with a '-'.
For example, '-*.bak;-*.obj;' would screen out all files with the bak and
obj extensions. Date filtering is also possible, using the signs >, >=,
==, <=, and < followed by the date in the format shown in the file
date window EXCEPT you must use a 4 digit year. For example, -*.bak;-*.obj;>=01/01/1999;'
would add date filtering to show only files dated on or after 01/01/1999. |

FileStar/2 Tip 002: 08/01/1999 |
| Would you like to have a file or hard copy listing
of all of the files, sorted by directory and current file window sort,
on your boot drive? Or any other drive or directory? Then read on.
FileStar/2 can create and save a list of all selected
files, including the file CRCs if desired (the latter takes a trifle longer).
Use the multiple-directories viewing capability to read all the files you
are interested in into a file window. Just Ctrl+Shift+double click (or
Read Branch from the menu) on the desired directory to read a directory,
including sub-directories, to the window's list of files. Obviously, if
you do this on the root directory, you get all files that match the filter
read into the window. Use an appropriate filter unless you really want
all files. Once the window contains the directories desired, sort them
with the sort desired for the list. Then select all files. If there are
several thousands, this can take a while and uses the CPU to the point
that you can't do much else so expect that. The 'Selected' window in the
data panel shows selection progress for large number of files. When all
files are selected, go 'Files->FileList->List Layout and select from the
options how you want the list formatted. Then go 'File List->Save List'
to start the process. When it finishes, you'll have your list (FILELIST.SAV)
in the current directory. Rename it as appropriate and save it to some
safe place to keep from overwriting it next time you do this. |

FileStar/2 Tip 003: 08/01/1999 |
| Are you looking for a way to delete all files
from a drive that match a wild card? Or to copy or move them to a common
directory? Then use the technique explained in Tip 002, to read the drive
(or directory branch) into a common file window, using a file filter as
appropriate. For example, *.bak;<1/1/1998 would show all files with
the bak extension dated before 01/01/1998. Then perform the mass operation
desired on the files. Use caution and do not delete or move files that
are essential to some application. |

FileStar/2 Tip 004: 08/041999 |
| Now that you have maybe thousands of files in
a file window, you may want to find a specific file. The standard OS/2
folder will search for the first character typed. In FS/2, press 'Shift+|'
and as you enter a filename in the entry field that appears at the bottom
of the window, a new search occurs with each additional character
entered and the first file match is highlighted. It generally only takes
2-3 characters to find what you are looking for. Any action, other than
entering more characters, kills the entry field. |
| FileStar/2 Tip 005: 08/13/1999 |
| When querying a directory, you may click on any
other directory once the Directory Query dialog is displayed. It is not
necessary to wait until the current query completes before selecting another.
You may also use the keyboard and scroll through the directories with the
Query dialog summarizing the results as you scroll. |
| UniMaint Tip
001: 09/22/1999 |
| You may force UniMaint to use a private UNIMAINT.INI
file instead of the OS2.INI file for storage of program parameters. To
do so, copy the 'Uni Maintenance' and 'UniWatch' (if it exists) applications
from the current OS2.INI file to UNIMAINT.INI. To copy the OS2.INI 'Uni
Maintenance' and 'UniWatch' applications, select each application in the
Applications window of UniMaint then use the popup menu to 'CopyApplication'.
Enter UNIMAINT.INI as the file name in the File Dialog. The UNIMAINT.INI
file will be created if it does not exist. Then close UniMaint. Thereafter
the private UNIMAINT.INI file will be used. To re-commence using the OS2.INI
file for storage, delete the UNIMAINT.INI file. |
| FileStar/2 Tip 006:10/17/1999 |
You may use the modifier keys Shift and Alt to
control what type windows the OS2 and DOS buttons on the toolbar open in
v2.1. If any of these keys are held down while clicking the button, the
following occurs:
Shift - Window opens full screen.
Alt - Window opens with shell environment and
says [Shell] in title bar.
Use the os2start.cmd and dosstart.bat files to tailor
the opening environment. If ANSI.SYS is installed (DEVICE=X:\OS2\MDOS\ANSI.SYS),
they can be use to tailor the window colors and prompt.
