EA View

The EA View dialog may be used to view, add, edit or delete Extended Attributes (EAs). The EAs associated with the selected file object are individually listed in the Extended Attributes List and the value is shown in the Extended Attributes Data window. EA View Dialog

The initial state of the EA View dialog is view mode only. However, pushing either the Add or Edit pushbuttons will convert it into an EA editor. Use with caution, and only if one understands the effect, in the editor mode when editing a binary EA.

Controls

• Disable File Selection - Normally clicking on a file or directory in FS/2 will update the display to the currently selected file object. Use this checkbox to disable file selection which allows use of FS/2 without changing the displayed object EA data.

• Extended Attribute List - Shows all the EAs for the selected file object and allows individual EA selection for display, editing and deletion. If a multi-valued EA is selected, the display adds columns for the Type (generally MVMT or MVST) and Data Type for the selected type.

• Data View - This pushbutton toggles the displayed EA through different data views for most EAs. The opening default view presents the value of the EA and the pushbutton is labeled with the type data. Pressing the pushbutton again will in turn present the following:

  Binary EA Value - Shows the EA starting with the control words that define the EA type.

  Binary View of EA - Shows the complete data for the EA.

  Binary View of EA List - Shows the view of all EAs for the file object.

  
  Data Length - Use this pushbutton to combine text for MVMT data of the same data type, such as the .COMMENT EA.
  
  Critical EA - This checkbox will be checked if the selected EA has been designated a critical EA. It is used to display the EA state only. If a user changes the state, it will have no effect.
  
  Add - Use this pushbutton to add an EA to the file object. This action calls the ADD EA dialog which is used to select the type EA to add. After selecting the type, the data display is used to enter the EA data.
  
  Del - Use this pushbutton to delete an EA from the file object.
  
  Edit - Use this pushbutton to edit an EA of the file object. The data display changes from read only to edit mode.
  
  Save - Use this pushbutton to update/save an EA to the file object. While editing an EA, this button is labeled Update and must be pushed to enable the Save operation.

  Operation

  When the dialog opens, it will display the current selected file or directory in FS/2. Once open, any other file or directory may be selected to update and display the EAs for that file object.

  Data fields, to the left of the EA list, display the number and total size of the EAs for the selected file object. Additionally, the code page, if one exists, is shown for the selected EA.

  All EAs for the file are listed in the EA list. Select the EA desired to view the value for a listed EA. The Extended Attribute Data window will display the EA value in the appropriate type text, binary or icon display.

  The Data View button may be pushed to step through a 4-step ring to display different binary storage views of the EA as noted above. These views are only for those that are interested in how EAs are stored and have no practical use for the average user.

  the Data Length pushbutton may be pushed to view MVMT type .COMMENT EAs as one comment.

  Refer to the help in the Add EA dialog for help in adding an EA.

  If editing an EA, a user should understand the effect of editing a particular EA. When the Edit button is pushed, the Extended Attribute Data window becomes editable for text and binary EAs. An Icon is presented for an .ICON EA. Push the icon to replace it with another icon located using the presented File Dialog.

  To save an edited EA, two steps are required. First, when an EA is edited, the Save button becomes an Update button. This step updates the displayed EA but does not save it. Once updated, the Save button is used to save it.
