Copy or Move Errors

A Copy or Move file I/O error will cause the following dialog to be displayed:

Copy or Move Error Handler

The dialog is application modal which means it preempts all mouse and keyboard inputs to the FS/2 window. If FS/2 is needed to perform some file maintenance while this dialog is present, start another FS/2 session.

The source and target files are shown in separate fields. The cause of the error is shown in the error field.

The center section of the dialog is used when a duplicate file name exists in the target directory. It shows the file data of the source and duplicate target files. There will be a file Rename field and, if a file longname EA is being created for the target file, a Title field. If there is a title field, only it can be edited to rename the file and the file Rename field will show a unique incremented file name that will be used to copy or move the file. This only occurs on drives formatted for the FAT file system. The unique longname EA will allow copying this file back to a HPFS drive with the original case and the name shown in the title field.

Duplicate File Error on FAT Target Drive

There are two pushbuttons which may be used to determine the likeness of two files if the error is caused by the source and target files having the same name. They are:

If the error was because a duplicate file name exists in the target directory, pushing Bin will perform a binary comparison of the two files. The result of the comparison will be shown in the Message window. If the files are the same, the Skip button will change to green; if not alike, the button will change to yellow.

If the error was because a duplicate file name exists in the target directory, pushing Txt will start a byte comparison of the two files using the associated external comparison program.

There are six pushbuttons which you use to direct how to recover from the error. They are:

This option is available only if Confirm Copy Overwrite is checked in the Settings Notebook, Page 2_1 (Options Tab). If the error was because a duplicate file name exists in the target directory, pushing Overwrite All will cause the program to not only overwrite the file shown but all other cases of duplicate file names in the target directory for the current operation.

This option is available only if Confirm Copy Overwrite is checked in the Settings Notebook, Page 2_1 (Options Tab). If the error was because a duplicate file name exists in the target directory, pushing OverWrite will cause the program to overwrite only the file shown.

This pushbutton is enabled if there is a file in the target directory with the same name and the name in the Rename field has not been edited. Pushing the Rename All button will cause the program to rename all files in the current operation that require renaming with unique file names automatically. The renaming convention is similar to the WPS method for compatibility.

If there is a file in the target directory with the same file name, a suggested name is entered in the Rename field. Pushing the Rename button will cause the program to rename the file as shown in the Rename entry field.

Pushing Skip will cause the program to skip copying the file shown in the title bar. This is also useful for filling floppy disks after receiving a disk full error.

This pushbutton is enabled whenever a duplicate file name exists in the target directory and that file has attributes that will prevent a successful overwrite. If you wish to overwrite the file, pushing the Clear Attr button will clear the 'RSH' attributes so overwriting is possible. Otherwise, Skip this file. Pushing Clear Attr with the Ctrl key down will cause automatic clearing of 'RSH' file attributes for all files in the current operation.

If an error occurs where the attributes are not the cause of the error, the Clear Attr button is labeled Retry. Pushing the Retry button will make another attempt to copy the same file. This allows the user to clear an attribute or close a file for a 'file in use' error, etc, then retry the operation.
