When enabled, this option deletes the .LONGNAME EA of files copied to a long name capable file system other than the FAT file system. The file is copied using the source file name as the target file name. The .LONGNAME EA is deleted from both the source and target files when both have EA support. However, the .LONGNAME EA on the FAT file system is preserved. The files systems affected by this option are HPFS, JFS and FAT32. Using this option will decrease the drive scan time of a drive and keep the use of .LONGNAME EAs to a minimum. It has no detrimental effect on the file system.
When disabled, both the long name (title), if present, and the real file name of a file is preserved. The result is the same as files copied from the command line (see below for differences with the WPS).
FS/2 does not create a longname EA when copying a file unless the target drive is formatted with the FAT file system. When coping files to the FAT file system, long file names are preserved by writing the real source file name to the target file as the .LONGNAME EA and truncating the real file name as necessary to the '8.3' upper case name. Copying files from a FAT file system results in the .LONGNAME EA being used as the target real name. Neither of these actions are affected by this option.
When copying a file to any file system that does not support EAs, this option is ignored and the source real file name is used for the target file name.
The effect of this option when moving or renaming files is the same as noted above.
WPS Characteristics
See Real File names versus WPS Titles.
When populating a WPS folder with files that have no .LONGNAME EA, the WPS displays the real file name as the WPS title (longname) but does not create an .LONGNAME EA.
When copying files, the WPS creates a target file name from the source .LONGNAME EA (WPS title) if one exists. If one does not exist, then the source real file name is used as the target file name and a like-named .LONGNAME EA is created for the file. Therefore, files copied by the WPS will always create a .LONGNAME EA for the target file - and will change the real file name if different from the WPS title.
When renaming the real file name, the WPS title is updated to the new file name.
