Setting More Configuration Options

Settings Notebook - Page 2_2

Load titles - Windows A and B - If this option is enabled, a files search includes a search for each file's longname EA which may be displayed in a 'Titles' column. This option may also be toggled on or off from the Directories menu as a cascaded option of Refresh. When this option is toggled on, a refresh of the Files window occurs and the Show Titles option in the Window Options menu is enabled. The Show Titles option may then be set on or off without affecting the Load Titles option setting.

The effect of searching for the longname EA is an increase in scan search time. The measurable effect will vary with hardware performance and may or may not be noticeable. It has therefore been made an option.

There is generally no need to view file 'Titles' unless extensively working with FAT drives. If a function needs the longname EA, such as during a FAT-HPFS directory comparison, a longname search is performed regardless of the state of this option.

See 'Delete HPFS longname EA' for more discussion on longname EAs.

Load subjects - Windows A and B - If this option is enabled, a search for subject EAs is performed during directory scans. This option may also be toggled from the Directories menu as a cascaded option of Refresh. When this option is toggled on, a refresh of the Files window occurs and the Show Subjects option in the Window Options menu is enabled. The Show Subjects option may then be set on or off without affecting the Load Subjects option setting.

The effect of searching for the subject EA is an increase in scan search time. The measurable effect will vary with hardware performance and may or may not be noticeable. It has therefore been made an option. The use of this option will be dependent of your use of this feature.

Default editor is internal - Checking this option on will cause FlexEdit to be used for the default editor. The default editor is used whenever the Edit function is called from the menu or toolbar and no modifier key is depressed.

Unchecking this option will result in use of the External Programs editor if no modifier key is depressed.

Default viewer is internal - Checking this option on will cause FlexEdit to be used for the default viewer. The default viewer is used whenever the Browse function is called from the menu or toolbar and no modifier key is depressed or the file is double clicked with the mouse.

Unchecking this option will result in use of the External Programs viewer if no modifier key is depressed or the file is double clicked with the LMB.

Auto remap drives - If this option is checked, the following actions will cause a remap of the available drives;

Upon remap, any remote drive that is sensed 'Not ready' will be removed from, and any 'Ready' remote drive not previously mapped will be added to, the Drives window list.

Timed remap of drives - If this option is enabled, a timer is used to check and, if required, remap the drives available at a fixed interval. The dialog window to set the interval appears when the option is turned on. Use of this option will cause automatic removal from or addition to the drives list, without any action by the user, of any remote drive that has had its status changed.

NOTE: Do not use this feature if your system accesses CDROM juke boxes. The polling of these devices will render them unusable.

Auto scroll tree on expand - If this option is enabled, the directory tree will auto scroll when a branch is expanded if, in its expanded state, it will extend below the bottom of the Directories window. There is a limit that keeps the expanded directory from scrolling above two directories below the top of the window.

Auto scroll file windows - If this option is enabled, the file windows will auto scroll when the mouse pointer is dragged close to the edges of the window with the LMB down. This facilitates swipe selection of files without having to stop and manually scroll the window.

Scroll to cursored file on sort - This is a toggle option that, when enabled, will cause the cursored file to be scrolled to within the viewable file area (viewport) whenever a sort action is invoked, either automatically or manually.

Global show progress bar - This is an option toggle that, when enabled, will set the default action to show progress bars for file functions. However, each function that uses a progress bar also has an Show Progress Bar check box on the function dialog that may be used to override this option and turn on or off progress bars for that function in the current session. Essentially, what this option does when enabled is always set the check box on a function dialog to the checked state on first use of that function during a session of FS/2. Throughout the remainder of the session, the set state is retained. If this global option is not enabled, the opposite happens, the function Show Progress Bar check box is initially set to the unchecked state on first use in a session.

MMB selects/double clicks - If checked, MB3, the middle mouse button on a 3 button mouse, will single click or simulate a double click on any control as appropriate. This means you may use MB3 in lieu of the LMB for all uses except selecting (single click) an item that recognizes both single and double clicks. This option overrides any third party application that also re-programs MB3, but only within FS/2.

Single click drives/directories - If checked, a single click is all that is necessary in the Drives and Directories window (and the DirMarks window) to read or refresh that drive or directory. A double click is of no consequence and has no effect. To select a drive or directory without causing a rescan, select with the LMB and the Ctrl key down or select with the RMB. The latter also causes the context menu to appear.

If unchecked, standard OS/2 single and double click moding is in effect.

Delete HPFS longname EA - When enabled, this option causes the deletion of the longname EA of selected files when copying files from a HPFS partition.

When a directory or file is created or renamed using the WPS, it is possible, even likely, that the WPS object 'title' may differ from the real file system name or, to make matters worse, a file or directory may have the same title as the real name of a different file/directory. This happens because the WPS creates a title the same as the real file name if a longname EA does not exist. This can cause confusion at times, especially on a HPFS partition, when using a file manager such as FS/2 that operates on and principally displays real file names and the WPS which shows titles for object names.

Other than the Desktop folder, it seems to make little sense to even create longname EAs for files and directories on a HPFS partition. FS/2 does not create a longname EA when copying a file to a HPFS partition. Given the fact that the WPS does this, the solution is to delete all the longname EAs, except those for the Desktop directory, and let the WPS recreate them using the real file name on next WPS use on a file object.

Suppress create dir query - Enabling this option will cause the popup query that occurs when copying files/directories to a target directory that does not exist to be suppressed.

Suppress EA support warning - Enabling this option will cause the popup warning that occurs when copying files/directories to a target drive that does not support EAs to be suppressed.

Conditional cascaded menus - Enabling this option will cause many of the menu items that have extended submenus to be converted to a conditional cascaded menu item.

A conditional cascaded menu item has a default action if the item is simply clicked withouts clicking is the 'boxed' submenu indicator. If it is not a conditional menu item, the submenu is extended.

Auto extend refresh menu - If conditional cascaded menus items are not being used, enabling this option will result in the auto extension of the submenu items for the Refresh menu item.

No dialog window close buttons - For those dialog windows that do not have a minimize or maximize button and for which OS/2 does not provide a titlebar 'Close' button, FS/2 adds a titlebar Close button if this option is not enabled. Enabling this option will prevent FS/2 from creating the titlebar close button. This may be desirable to eliminate duplicate titlebar 'Close' buttons when a 3rd party application is being used that provides a 'Close' button.

Faster drive scan - With this option enabled, a drive scan reads/adds all 1st levels directories to the tree. It then scans each of these for subdirectories. If one is found, it adds ONLY that subdirectory (which will add the '+') and moves on to checking the next 1st level directory. This results in the absolute minimum skeletal tree and the fastest possible tree building. With this option not enabled, it it adds all second level directories to all 1st level directories.

If there is a current directory for the drive, that first level directory is read down to the level necessary to find the current directory.

If Read All Dirs is checked in the Drives menu, it reads all directories into the tree regardless of this option state.
