Delete

The Directories->Delete menu item will initiate a directory delete operation. There is always at least one level of user confirmation before a directory is deleted unless the directory is empty.

The first level of confirmation is optional and activates a Delete Directory Confirmation dialog that asks for confirmation. This dialog may be bypassed by unchecking Confirm directory delete on the Options page 2_1 of the Settings notebook or the Directories->Delete->Confirm menu item. If the confirmation is turned off, the Delete menu item is over and underlined; if confirmation is checked on, the menu item will indicate that it is a dialog item (...).

Note: The first level of confirmation may be toggled with the extended menu item Subdirectories->Delete->Confirm. as well as using the option in the Settings notebook.

The second level of confirmation is always invoked if the directory is not empty. An Interactive Message window will appear showing the full path of the directory to be deleted and a warning that it contains files or subdirectories. The user may elect to continue or abort.

If confirmation is turned off and the directory is empty of files or other subdirectories, it is deleted without any further intervention when this item is selected.

The Directories->Delete menu item has a cascaded submenu containing four delete options;

• Directory - default item when Delete is selected without accessing the submenu items. This item deletes the selected directory or calls the Delete Directory dialog.

• Files - deletes all files in the directory but does not delete the directory. This operation results in a much faster deletion of all files when compared with selecting all files and deleting them from the Files window.

• Branch Files - deletes all files in the selected directory and all of its subdirectories. No directories are deleted.

• Confirm - Toggles the option to confirm any directory delete. With confirmation disabled, there will still be a 'last chance' confirmation to proceed before any directory delete action if the directory is not empty.

These same options are also available on the Delete Directory dialog when it is in use. The option may be changed on the dialog regardless of which option was used to start the dialog.
