Directory Copy

The default action of the Directories->Copy menu item activates the Copy Directory dialog from which a user may copy the selected directory (the source directory) to any drive on the system that is write enabled. This default action is to copy all files and subdirs in the directory. The conditional cascaded menu has three options:

• With All Files - The default action. Copies all files and subdirectories.
  
• With Filtered Files - Copies only those files matching the file filter in use in the Files window.
  
• Without Files - This copies the directory without copying any files and results in a skeletal subdirectory tree of the directory only.

Directory and file attributes, such as date and time of creation, and extended attributes are copied from the source to the target.

Drive Copy

If the source directory is the root directory of a drive, the menu item is labeled Drive Copy. A suggested target name of 'X_Drive' is presented in the Copy dialog where X is the source drive. A Drive Copy should copy all files and directories to the target X_Drive directory, creating the target directory if necessary.

Copying Multiple Directories

Multiple directories may be copied in the same copy job by setting the Files window to display subdirectories of the parent directory. Select the subdirectories to be copied in the Files window. Then select the Subdirectories->Copy menu item to initiate the operation and use the same procedures as a directory copy.

Updating A Target Directory

An existing target directory may be updated by pressing the Copy button on the Copy dialog while holding down the Ctrl key. This action will copy only new and files newer than existing files (overwriting the existing files) to a target directory. All copy errors are handled without a query. If a file is not copied for some reason, it will be noted in the fs_ops.log if use of that log option is enabled.

Setting the Target Directory

The Copy Directory dialog uses the point and click interface, with the user clicking on a directory in the directories tree, to automatically enter the full target path. Optionally, the user may manually enter the full target path for the copy operation. If the user enters a target directory name that does not exist, it will be created. However the path must exist up to the non-existing target directory.

A Copy operation copies the directory in the dialog Copy field to the target path directory in the to field. Global filename characters are not allowed in target names.

Copy to an Existing Directory

Existing files and directories in the target path will be overwritten unless Confirm Copy Overwrite in checked on page 2_1 of the Settings Notebook. The default for this option is enabled with a new FILESTAR.INI file.

If Confirm Copy Overwrite is enabled, an existing file name the same as the source name will trigger a Copy Error dialog, wherein the file may be skipped or overwritten. If the Overwrite All button is pressed in the dialog, all other same name existing files in the target directory will be overwritten in the same copy job.

Existing files and directories which have the read only (r) attribute set will cause an error which can be handled individually or set to overwrite all such files by pressing the Clear Attr button on the Copy Error dialog. Pressing this button with the Ctrl key down will overwrite all remaining files with the 'r' attribute in the current copy job.

Directory Copy Files Only

There is no option in either the Directories or Subdirectories menus to copy only the files in the current selected directory. To copy only the files in a directory (no subdirectories), use the Files->Copy command after setting the file filter to '*' and selecting all files.
