The Active Window

The Drives and Directories windows, at the left of the FS/2 display, show the drive and volume directory tree for the directory displayed in the active Files window. The background color is matched to enhance association. Any of these four windows be selected as the active window, allowing for drive, directory or file operations. To activate a particular window, click anywhere within the window with the left mouse button or use the F5 (Drives), F6 (Directories, F7 (Files A), or F8 (Files B) function keys.

The two Files windows (in tiled vertical and horizontal styles) allow viewing the contents of two separate directories simultaneously (or in a Multi-Directory view, combined directories may be viewed) and copying or moving files between them.

Drives Window Active

One of the internal windows will normally be the active window with user mouse and keyboard inputs enabled. When a dialog window is used it will normally become the active window. However, most dialog windows are modeless and allow the user to refocus on one of the internal windows with the dialog remaining in the foreground or background. Use the F9 key to force a dialog to the background.

Only one internal window can be the active and accept keyboard input. The active window generally depends on whether drive, directory or file operations are being performed. The active window is indicated by the color of the title bar (and border if customized by the Scheme Palette, which is highly recommended). By default, recessive window titlebars will appear gray with dark gray title text while the active window will appear dark blue/purple with white title text. It is important to always keep in mind which window is active since some operations on files and directories are invoked by common commands that are active window specific when initiated from the Toolbar.

The active window title bar color may be changed for the FS/2 window without affecting other Desktop windows. When the main window title bar color is changed, the titlebars of the internal windows will inherit those colors after a restart. To change the color of the FS/2 title bar, activate a Color Palette. Then activate FS/2. Drag a color to the FS/2 title bar and drop it. Make sure that the drag from the palette did not activate the Palette and deactivate FS/2. Some desktop enhancers will not allow this. Deactivate the offending program if that is the case. It should be possible to drag a color from the inactive palette without taking focus from the FS/2 window.

FS/2 has two internal windows, the Toolbar and Data Panel windows, that have a raised border to indicate the active state. When inactive, these windows have a depressed border. To activate the Toolbar for keyboard use, press the F2 key. Mouse clicking in the Toolbar does not normally activate the window. To activate the Data Panel, click anywhere in the Date or Time windows or use the F9 key. A mouse click in the other subwindows or buttons may invoke other functions and normally does not activate the window.

To set the focus to any of the Data Panel subwindows or buttons, usually for the purpose of invoking help with the F1 key, activate the window with F9 and then hold down the Alt key and use the left/right cursor keys to scroll through the available buttons and windows. See Keys Help for additional keyboard information.

In some instances, it is necessary for a user to take the input focus from all internal windows and make the FS/2 window itself the active window (one instance is when accessing General Help with the F1 function key). To toggle input focus to and from the FS/2 window, use either the F4 or Esc function key, mouse click the FS/2 titlebar or use the Alt+Cursor Up/Down cursor keys to window scroll to set focus in the FS/2 window only.
