New Capabilities, Functions

While the main window layout and appearance is intentionally much the same as its v2 predecessor, most all functions have been improved in both coding and speed. The major and most, but not all, minor improvements in v3 compared to v2 are summarized below.

FlexEdit

FlexEdit is a feature rich internal editor/viewer- See FlexEdit description.
Auto-browse shows randomly selected files in FlexEdit with FS/2 remaining in the foreground or background.
FlexEdit is used to show several of the reports that FileStar/2 can generate.
Print by file, pages, lines or blocks set in FlexEdit. Use different fonts for headers/footers and text body. Spin buttons set margins in inches/millimeters.

Windows

Many new menu options, including forward/backward buttons to toggle through last used directories and activate FlexEdit.
Toolbar has improved 256-color icons.
Drives and directories windows have LMB single click action to change active directory.
Directories window has variable default window sizing in horizontal axis.
Directories or Files are shown in the Files window(s) for enhanced multiple directory manipulations.
Expanded control of Details view, including all date types and icon columns.
Automatic rescaling to fit desktop upon desktop resolution changes.
Data Panel buttons and subwindows scale to font. Panel color tracks active window color. May be hidden.
Lock internal windows to prevent accidental user resizing.
Improved auto cursor scrolling of file windows when cursored file is at side/top/bottom of window.
WPS style in place editing of file and directory names, file subjects and titles (subject and long file name EAs).
Single clicking a drive letter in the drive window shows drive used/free data.
The Data Panel 'Selected' window may be click-toggled to show number of bytes or files selected.

Drag-n-Drop

Drag and drop directories within the directory tree(s).
Drag and drop files and directories to/from the Files window(s).

Activity Indicators

Copy, move and delete progress bars for files and directory operations.
Task size and state during copy, move and delete directory operations.

Network Support

A Connect dialog shows available shares which may be used to map shares.
A Lan Connections dialog shows current shares and may be used to disconnect any or all current shares.
Customized support for FTP.IFS and NetDrive. Remote directory is mapped to FS/2 drive. Use internal commands such a ZipView, Copy, View on remote sites. ZipView can show/extract remote zip file contents.
Drives menu item to detach/disconnect the selected drive.

Drives Support

Manual, auto and or timed remapping of current drives.
Refresh or eject removable drives.
Show only the current directory in the tree view vice all directories.

Directory Navigation

Last Used directories buttons on menu bar.
Mouse chord in Files window shows Last Used directories list.
Frequently Used and Last Used directory lists are expanded to 20 entries.
Last Used directories list maintains chronological order.
DirMarks are an easy, configurable way to access frequently used directories. Two clicks to get to any directory that has been configured. Configurable by groups with point and click techniques. Mouse chord in the directories window shows DirMarks dialog.

Directory Functions

Create nested directories.
Multi-directory viewing/listing may be sorted by directories.
Improved directory compare, including CRC comparison.
Selectable auto-seek current directory with a toggle button in the title bar.
Improved auto-expand of directories.
Ctrl-click to fully expand/collapse a directory.
Show sum of all files when directories are displayed in the Files Details view.

File Functions

Print by file, pages, lines. Use different fonts for headers/footers and text body. Spin buttons set margins in inches/millimeters.
Copying files from CDs auto strips the read only attribute.
Split large files with selectable split sizes. Rejoin split files.
Fast or secure file obliteration.
Delete LONGNAME, ICON, SUBJECT EAs or any named EA from selected files.
Remove selected files from Files window.
Optional use of FS/2 and WPS associations or combinations of the two.
Set file filter by selected extension.
Improved file filters including a size filter.
Compare file CRCs or display single file CRC.
Include CRCs in files lists.
Copy selected file data to clipboard.

Desktop Backup and Restore

Optional timed or on demand desktop backup with restore command file.

Find text function integrated in the Find dialog. Grep or string search by selected files, directory or drive(s). Text search any type file.
Search results are clickable and opens to line in FlexEdit if a text file.
Find files and click to open by set FS/2 associations.

View

Clipboard viewer using a FlexEdit window.

Query

Query shows the selected file/directory details. User may cursor scroll to query other files/directories. Dialog shows directory/files number/sizes, all date info, read/write status, attributes. Use other buttons to open Properties and EA dialogs or to View/Edit files.

New printer setup functions.

Zip Support

ZipView shows executable zip file contents, extracts selected files.
ZipView Extract function creates directory if needed.
Zip setup support for system TMP directory, auto selects another drive if insufficient TMP file space.
Zip support for the 'R' option, recursive directory zipping from the current directory.

Copy and Restore Drives

Drive copy a drive to a directory on another drive.
Restore by copying backup to reformatted drive and move directories/files to root.

Multiple File Rename

New ways to rename selected multiple files, by serialization, add, trim, exclude, include, remove character or string.

EA Support

View/edit EAs for any file or directory by scrolling through the FS/2 file lists or directory tree.

Error Handling

Improved error handling, error logs and displays.

Dialogs

Font setup support to set the static text font in FS/2 dialogs.
Dialogs coded to support a user set system default font which reduces dialog size.
Most dialogs may be set behind/in front of the FS/2 window with the F9 key. This is particularly useful for the Find, Directory Compare and Query dialogs or when using FS/2 set to full screen.

Named Threads and Exception Handlers

Named threads and auto-restart of base threads on some exceptions.
Optional exception handlers for main and/or all other threads.
Exception dialogs and exception logging when possible.
Visual tape display of thread activity.

Logs

Optional logging of operations, info messages and directory navigation.

Setup

New and enhanced setup options, including some quick set menu options.
Improved color and font customization.

Help

Help greatly expanded and includes many screen shot examples.
Most all menu and dialog controls have specific help pages.
